Everyday Wisdom

A brief pause before the rest of your daily note.

Everyday Wisdom adds a short English reflection to your Obsidian Daily Notes. Its 366 reflections follow a fixed calendar, including February 29. Everything works offline, with no account required.

A Modest Beginning

A new year can begin with an ordinary act done carefully. A promise starts to mean something when you give it a place in your day.

What small action would make your intention visible today?

The collection contains contemporary reflections, not attributed historical quotations. Most end with an optional question; 64 simply offer something to notice. Nothing needs to be answered or completed.

Get started

Requires Obsidian 1.13.1 or later and the Daily notes core plugin.

  1. Enable Daily notes and choose its folder, date format, and optional template.
  2. Enable Everyday Wisdom, then open its settings.
  3. Leave Automatic insertion on and create a new daily note as usual.

The reflection appears after the note's properties and before the body. You can choose the bottom of the note instead.

  • The note's date chooses the reflection, including past or future dates. March 1 always receives the same entry, regardless of leap years.
  • Turning the switch off stops additions to new notes and keeps existing reflections.
  • Opening an existing note, enabling the switch, or restarting Obsidian does not add missing reflections. Use Backfill for existing notes.
  • Reflections are ordinary Markdown. They stay in your notes after the plugin is disabled or uninstalled. Updating the collection does not rewrite them.

Installation

Install from the Obsidian Community listing using Add to Obsidian, then install and enable Everyday Wisdom in Obsidian.

For a newly approved plugin, Obsidian says app search and downloads can take up to 24 hours to become available. A live web listing does not mean the app directory has synced yet. If the app cannot find the plugin, wait for that sync or use the manual installation below.

For a manual installation, use the published GitHub release:

  1. Download everyday-wisdom-1.0.0.zip and extract it.
  2. Put the everyday-wisdom folder inside <vault>/.obsidian/plugins/ (or your vault's custom configuration folder).
  3. Reload Obsidian, enable Community plugins, and enable Everyday Wisdom.

To update a manual installation, replace main.js, manifest.json, and styles.css in that folder, then disable and re-enable the plugin. Keep data.json to preserve your settings.

Settings

SettingWhat it does
Automatic insertionAdd a reflection only to daily notes created while this is on. The choice is saved.
Insert positionPlace new reflections after properties or at the end. Existing reflections stay where they are.
BackfillPreview and fill missing reflections in a date range or all existing daily notes. Missing dates do not create files.
DeletionPreview and remove unchanged reflections generated by this plugin. Keep note files, personal writing, and edited reflections.

Backfill and Deletion ask for confirmation after a preview. You can stop after the current note. Results show updates, skips, failures, and notes not processed. Notes changed after preview are skipped. Deletion turns automatic insertion off by default; you can keep it on for future notes instead. There is no individual insertion command or context-menu action.

Supported daily-note dates

Use a complete calendar date format such as YYYY-MM-DD, D MMMM YYYY, or YYYY/MM/DD for date-based subfolders. The path relative to the daily-note folder must match the format exactly. Notes outside that folder, yearless or month-only dates, week dates, and ordinal-day formats are left alone.

Core Daily notes is the supported baseline. If Periodic Notes has daily notes enabled, the bundled helper uses its daily settings instead; that integration has not been tested in the actual app.

Your writing stays yours

The plugin preserves properties and existing body text. Identifying HTML comments prevent duplicates and allow safe removal. They are hidden in Live Preview and Reading view; Source mode shows the original Markdown. Keep these comments if you want duplicate detection and cleanup to work.

Edited reflections and damaged markers are preserved. If a note contains both edited and unchanged blocks, Deletion keeps the whole note unchanged. Removing all the identifying comments makes a reflection ordinary text that the plugin can no longer recognize. Cleanup may leave blank separator lines in place.

Privacy

There are no accounts, payments required for features, telemetry, AI calls, remote content downloads, or background network requests. All reflections and helper code are bundled. The plugin operates inside your vault and does not access files elsewhere.

Help and feedback opens GitHub only when clicked. The optional Feed the Markhor 🦌🪽 button opens Ko-fi only when clicked. Neither link sends note content.

Compatibility and known limitations

  • The owner has tested the main workflow on macOS. The detailed acceptance record is in TESTING.md. Actual iOS, Android, and minimum-version testing remains pending; mobile compatibility is intended, not yet verified.
  • Template handling waits for a short quiet period and watches newly created notes for ten seconds. Arbitrary asynchronous Templater scripts beyond that window may require Backfill after the template finishes.
  • Imported or synced files that emit a create event after vault startup may be treated as new daily notes. Turn automatic insertion off before an import if needed.
  • Open views with different unsaved content are left alone. Reconcile them before retrying Backfill.
  • The plugin does not provide sync or resolve simultaneous edits from multiple devices. Keep your usual vault backups.

Build and test

Use Node.js 24 and npm. Packaging on macOS/Linux also requires zip.

npm ci
npm run package

This runs ESLint, unit and integration tests, TypeScript checks, all 366 content checks, and the production build. Tests use mock Obsidian APIs and real CodeMirror state; they do not replace real-app verification. Runtime imports are limited to host-provided Obsidian and CodeMirror APIs, with no Node/Electron dependencies.

The install ZIP, separate release attachments, and SHA-256 checksums are written to dist/. npm run test:vault creates an isolated test-vault/ for local testing and refuses to overwrite an existing folder.

Content and license

English content edition 0.4: read all 366 reflections, the editorial review, and content checks.

The code, documentation, and complete reflection collection are licensed under the MIT License. Third-party components retain their own notices in THIRD_PARTY_NOTICES.md.
