Tufte Figures

Why is this repository named Tufte-Sidenotes? A historical accident: during the plugin suite's first community-directory submission, this plugin's manifest was briefly mixed up with the sidenotes plugin's, and the directory registered the id tufte-figures against a repository by this name. The registry entry is immutable on our side, so the repository keeps the name it was registered under. The plugin itself is Tufte Figures (id tufte-figures) — the actual sidenotes plugin lives at PleiadesM/Tufte-Sidenote (singular).

An Obsidian plugin for composing Tufte-style figures: drop or paste an image to insert column figures with margin captions, full-width figures, or margin figures — with size adjustment, multi-image rows, an image-quilt generator (drag-arrange tiles into one transparent PNG), click-to-enlarge, an edit-at-cursor command, and auto-numbered clickable references. Renders in Reading view.

Part of Tufte for Obsidian — a theme and plugin suite carrying Edward Tufte's book design into Obsidian. Development, documentation, and issues live in the main repository; this repository exists to distribute the plugin through the Obsidian community directory.

Install

  • Manual: download main.js, manifest.json, and styles.css from the latest release into YourVault/.obsidian/plugins/tufte-figures/, then enable the plugin in Settings → Community plugins.
  • Pairs best with the Tufte theme, which supplies the margin gutter the captions sit in.
